World Masters Games provide opportunities to chase dreams: STRONG WIN Training Camp participants rekindle their youth
113-11-19
With less than 10 months until the WMG 2025 Taipei & New Taipei City, the STRONG WIN Training Camp continues to be held, allowing athletes to participate in various training programs to enhance their skills. With the assistance of professional instructors, athletes can not only improve their abilities but also rediscover their passion for sports. The stage of the World Masters Games 2025 offers young people who once suffered injuries or gave up sports a chance to chase their dreams once again. At the training camp, it feels like returning to a youthful state—training diligently, enjoying sports, and preparing to compete in the World Masters Games next year, making up for the past regrets of not being able to step onto a high-level stage.
Cheers to youth: Enjoying a second life in sports
“Volleyball defined my youth.” Wu Cheng-yang, a participant in the beach volleyball training camp, expresses endless emotions about volleyball. He decided to rekindle his volleyball dreams at the World Masters Games 2025 after being encouraged by friends and has signed up for both beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. Just like cooking without salt lacks flavor, volleyball is equivalent to his life; without volleyball, he cannot define himself.
In the beach volleyball training camp, Wu experiences something different from indoor volleyball. He explains that beach volleyball demands a lot of physical energy, leading to fatigue more easily, and the feedback to the body during jumps feels weaker, making it more challenging to jump than in indoor volleyball. He also seizes the opportunity to ask his coach about the rules for hitting a lob volley and setting the ball. Despite having broken his hand in college, he has returned to volleyball after entering the workforce and can still participate in international competitions after 30. He considers himself a half-athlete, aiming to participate in and enjoy the World Masters Games 2025, embodying the spirit of his favorite manga, Haikyu!!: “Never give up if the ball hasn’t hit the ground.” He boldly claims that he will still be jumping to serve at 45, with a goal to keep playing until he’s 65.
Honoring dreams: A first taste of being an athlete
Johnny, who has never participated in a sports competition as an athlete, decided to challenge himself by signing up for basketball events at the World Masters Games2025 to fulfill his dream of being an athlete. He actively participates in the 3 vs 3 basketball training camp, taking the training content and instructions seriously. He doesn’t hesitate to remind his teammates when they make mistakes and consistently offers encouragement during practice matches.
When discussing the benefits of the training camp, Johnny mentioned that the training teaches professional knowledge and skills, elevating his casual play to a competitive level. He realized that he needed more basketball knowledge to handle high-intensity competitions. Due to his busy work schedule, he usually doesn't have time to exercise. He hopes that through the World Masters Games 2025, he can develop a regular exercise habit and reunite with a few friends to relive the joyful moments of playing basketball together during his school days.
Remembering the past: A father’s dedication for his daughters
41-year-old Shih Wei-heng participated in a basketball training camp during his school days. After entering the workforce, he gradually forgot about basketball. To experience professional training and competition again, he signed up for the 3 vs 3 basketball events at the World Masters Games 2025, as well as the training camp, where he learned techniques such as tactical spacing and pick and roll.
Beyond basketball, Shih is also interested in baseball and athletics. However, he hasn’t yet found enough teammates for team events. He looks forward to finding like-minded partners during the training camp. As a resident of Northern Taiwan, he considers the WMG 2025 Taipei & New Taipei City his home ground. He mentioned that he hopes his daughters can attend the events in person, allowing him to share his passion for sports with them and also to cultivate their sports habits.
Crazy for volleyball: Giving it all to reach the finals
Having long been involved in volleyball, Wu Kong-sheng has a habit of exercising and has accepted an invitation from his teammates to join the beach volleyball training camp. He has experience in both indoor volleyball and beach volleyball and explains the differences between the two. Beach volleyball requires more strategic thinking because there are only two players, leading to more openings to exploit, much like a game of strategy where players discover weaknesses and attack. The back-and-forth exchanges provide a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment.
During the training camp, Wu also learned about attacking steps and defensive positioning in beach volleyball, enhancing his skills to be ready for competitions. In his spare time, he also arranges muscular endurance training to prepare himself. Now, at 42 years old, he sees many seniors still striving on the volleyball court, which reinforces his determination to continue exercising. He hopes to have the opportunity to advance to the finals at the World Masters Games 2025.
